Value-Added Monsters: Painting Pumpkins with CAIC

Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgust?

“I’ve created a monster!” That’s what CAIC’s social media manager, Pam Foulke, said after she brought this terrifying creation to life. (Did you know that a carved or painted pumpkin is actually a value-added product?) Made with a pumpkin from Maryland’s Councell Farms, along with some acrylic paint, it’s a perfectly spooky decoration for any Halloween celebration. 

Pam put her heart and soul into building this monstrous creature, and now, you can make your own! Just grab a pumpkin from your favorite local farm or farmers market, and then follow the steps in the video below to create your value-added monster. And don’t forget to share photos of your own terrifying creations with us on social media! 

 

What you’ll need:

  • A pumpkin 
  • Acrylic paint (either heavy or medium works)
  • A set of paintbrushes
  • A plate for mixing paint colors 
  • A screwdriver
  • Two bolts

Mini-Grants up to $5,000 are available for:
– Market Research and Validation of Target Market
– Customer Acquisition
– Product Development Initiatives
– Food Safety Classes
Eligibility
Value-added producers and companies with traction ($20,000 or more in yearly revenue) in Maryland and Delaware are eligible to apply for Mini-Grants. Participants may apply once for each of the categories. Applicants must demonstrate that they have a unique and differentiated product or service that incorporates an aspect of innovation or technology in its production, processing, distribution, or other element of the food supply system.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Award decisions will be made and funds will be available no later than three weeks following the receipt of a completed application.

Applicants must submit Mini-Grant proposals by filling out the form at this link. Copy(ies) of quote(s), proposal(s), estimate(s), or any other supporting documents.
